Peace!!! Non-violence!!!

Was just wondering... whats the difference b/w peace and non-violence...

If you are a person who thinks violence is not the right way to win... then are u going in for peace?? I dont think so..

Its just that you want to win it through some other means...

If you want to win through non-violence.. then are you a supporter of peace?? not neccesary... You still may not want peace.. u still have the urge to win...win over someone in a war...non-violence is a means of achieving something... that doesnt mean its peace....

Or is it that both are same!!!!

Nice read!!!!!

I guess peace is more of an internal characteristic..how u are as a person and hpw u react to sertain situations.

Non-violence is a more aggravted state..and has more to do with external factors and compulsions.

But yeah...thats just what I think.

peace is when, you decide to settle things after some efforts to solve a problem (violent or non violent)

non violence is a way to find solution to a problem that cud ultimately result in peace....

If this might help...NonViolence is a Peaceful resistence to something you do not like...

Peace - Harmonious living and existence.

Well I think both basically mean the same but the circumstances or the events surrounding them may differ..

Frm wht I can think of .. Non-Violence is an act where violence wasnt involved at all whereas peace seems relative.. it looks like an act of violence has given away to tht of nonviolence - which is peace.. nice one!!!!

I gather u are upset at Gandhi never being given the Peace prize....

The idea was...he never did stop a war...India was never capable of going to war against the British empire...

This is why he never won the award. But then...do we need a Nobel prize for MKG to tell us that he was a great soul?

Arts,
Peace is the cause and non-violence is the method....can be the converse too but human mind must be clear that it wants both for there cannot be peace w/o non-violence. Both non-violence and peace is success to the inner self!

That was some philosophy there :P But I'm a Libran....so peace/balance/non-violence/harmony...my mantra for life!

Jammy,
Welcome to the blog!!!

First of all.. i am not a fan MKG..., neither do i think he is a gr8 soul... He did a lot for the country(very good.. respect him for that)... so did lakhs of other people do(they are also equally gr8)...Just coz he was the leader of a certain group doesnt make him any gr8. So as for the award goes... every Indian who was part of the Indian Independence needs to get an award!!!

So no probs if he doesnt get an award...

I dont think i can talk about whether war could have done some good or no....

This post was not regarding the Gandhi thing.. It came to my mind as to y we mix up peace and non-violence.. so just wrote down....

PS: If I am offending any Gandhi fans... This is just my opinion.. no intension of hurting you...

Ganga,

My thoughts on ur questions!!!

//1)Is it possible to eliminate violence and still not have peace?How?Does the concept of peace mean more than the lack of violence? What else is needed for peace to be present?
//

Very much possible. Peace is something u can feel within.. If there are lot of things u want how can ur mind be at peace.... Peace need not explicitly mean wrt to the outside world...There is a possiblity that the whole world is fighting against each other in a violent way.. And we are sitting at home playing around with a cute little new born baby... Dont we have peace of mind then??

//2)Look over our mind maps on violence again. Could you use nonviolence to address many of those forms of violence? Does this expand your definition of what nonviolence means?
//

Not much idea on this

//3)How do you see your friends and collegues settling conflicts or arguments? Would you characterize them as violent or nonviolent?
//

Non-violent outside...but burning desire of smashing each other inside.. this is cold war!!!

//4)What does it take for a person to be nonviolent? How difficult do you think that is? Is nonviolence a sign of strength or weakness? Why?....
//

To be non-violent u need to have a lot patience... and strength to survive violence....and many more things i suppose
Quite difficult depending on the situation.. if a person is trying to throw a bomb at u..would non-violence help??
Its both strength & weakness... It can make the other person feel frustrated..irritated..does making his thinking capacity go down...as his stategies are not working...
May be a weakness as u are hurt physically, which makes u divert from ur thinking...after all body cant take care of itself.. u need to...

Uff!!! my little brain needs rest!!! :)

I agree with what you've said in your post - Peace implies non-violence but non-violence does not imply peace.

Fundoo said...

Peace and non-violence! Umm well well guess depends on the context in which you use these words right? Some one literarily challenged like me should have no opinion on this though!

What a heavy topic chosen when bored!!
Even I have no idea about this. Got to think a lot to be able to say something other than 'I dunno'.

Hmmm...
Yes! You are right Peace and non violence are not the same. It may not be right to compare these two.

I think violence and non-violece are the two means to achieve peace.We have to compare which is the right way to achieve peace: violence or non-violence and it's a debatable topic.

Ok. Its enough for now :)

Do Take care!
